Accommodation : Ritz Hotel, Sea Point

The Ritz is ideally situated just off the bustling Sea Point Main Road, minutes away from the beachfront, restaurants and shops and a short drive into the city and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, less than 3km away. You can also walk to the Waterfront – it is a pleasant and scenic 20 minute stroll along the promenade following the coast all the way.

Sea Point promenade runs the length of the beach front from Bantry Bay to Mouille Point. It is a great spot for

jogging, walking or just sitting on one of the many benches admiring the sea views, plus if you’re lucky do a bit of

whale-spotting.

Running the length of the promenade and heading towards Bantry Bay, is

the Sea Point Pavilion. This is a chlorinated, sea water swimming pool complex open to the public throughout the year.

It has two children’s pools, one diving pool with a 5m board, and an Olympic sized pool.

It is open Monday to Friday 06h00 – 21h00, Saturdays 07h00 -20h00 and Sundays 08h00-20h00.     http://www.africanskyhotels.com/

09h00 Departure on the ferry to Robben Island (Seal Island), which has seen much human suffering dating back to its early use as a penal settlement in the early 17th century. For nearly 400 years Robben Island, 12 kilometres from Cape Town, was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. It was here that rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society. It has in turn been a prison, a leper colony and an insane asylum, but it was its use as a political prison from the 1960’s that brought it to the attention of the world.

During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. The duty of those who ran the island and its prison was to isolate opponents of apartheid and to crush their morale. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. The most famous of all the prisoners that suffered within sight of Table Mountain was former President Nelson Mandela. Those imprisoned on the island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison 'hell-hole' into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Robben Island came to symbolise, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. The island is now a museum and a World Heritage Site.

Take a 30 minute ferry ride across the 12km that separate the island from the mainland, enjoy a tour of the island and visit the infamous prison and Nelson Mandela’s prison cell with a former political prisoner as your guide.
